Sex and the City turns 25 (yes, really)

On June 6th, 2023, “Sex and the City” officially celebrated its 25th anniversary (yes, I know, I can’t believe it either), before it went on to two movies, and the terrible reboot “And just like that”. It feels impossible to overstate the cultural impact of Sex and the City, which broke barriers with its wildly entertaining yet authentic and meaningful look at the lives of four empowered thirty-something women, who still maintain their grip on the zeitgeist decades later. And for me - who first moved to NYC, very far from home, when the show ran (1998-2004), it meant so much to see the current filming locations, and capture the chaotic dating scene in real time. The journey of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha always spoke to a wider and more diverse audience, to the point that I had elderly relatives in Colorado who turned out to be big fans of the show, and wondered aloud if my life was like that in the City. I couldn’t help but wonder (said in Carrie Bradshaw’s voice)…how the original show timing, parallels, and storylines have become very relevant over the years to so many of us. I moved in and out a few times, lived in 5 different neighborhoods, had crazy/exciting jobs, was first published there, and have countless stories/memories.

1. When the original SATC came out, it ran 1998 to 2004, when I was first living in NYC, so the story locations were places we all knew well too. It really reflected the era, and captured the moment in time forever.
2. It definitely captured the chaotic dating scene of the city.
3. There have been plenty of jokes over the years involving my name also being Carrie (there used to be billboards around the city with the name in bold) and being a part time writer in NYC, but I really had more career wise in common with…
4. …Samantha. Not personally, but I have also worked in PR/Communications in NYC, L.A., and London, and have never conformed to expectations around things like marriage/kids.(Actress Kim Cattrall is also half Canadian ;)

For all of their flaws (like we all have), I loved that the show came out just when I most needed it, as an early 20-something making their way, and I’m grateful to all of my NYC friends for all of those city adventures, then and now. Cheers to you, the show, the new New Yorkers exploring it, and one of the greatest cities in the world - I may not live there anymore, but I will love you forever.
